Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease Herbal Protocol

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in North America. Borrelia is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to a few species of the genus Ixodes (the so-called "hard ticks").  Lyme bacteria is a spirochete similar to syphilis. Reports indicate it may be sexually transmitted.  Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, depression, and a characteristic circular skin rash called erythema migrans. Left untreated, later symptoms may involve the joints, heart, and the central nervous system. In most cases, the infection and its symptoms are eliminated by antibiotics, especially if the illness is treated early. Late, delayed, or inadequate treatment can lead to the more serious symptoms, which can be disabling and difficult to treat.   Occasionally, symptoms such as arthritis persist after the infection has been eliminated by antibiotics, prompting suggestions that Borrelia causes autoimmune problems.

Autoimmunity is the failure of an organism to recognize its own constituent parts as self, which allows an immune response against its own cells and tissues.  Left untreated, chronic Lyme disease will debilitate and sometimes be fatal.  Antibiotic treatment does not eliminate Lyme disease from an infected individual.  Some residual Lyme spirochetes remain with the infected individual and symptoms may return.

Any individual with long-term Lyme disease needs to take active measures to protect the immune system.  Post antibiotic treatment is import for long term outcome.  Lyme disease is a serious infection and should not be taken lightly.  Patients with limited knowledge are at significant risk of long term health problems since insurance companies don't wanted to pay for appropriate care.  Once treated many insurance companies will not pay for chronic care.

Dean Martens, clinical herbalist, has developed an herbal protocol for individuals with Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.  His herbal company has developed a Lyme protocol suitable for post-antibiotic treatment and for those with chronic Lyme disease. This is an effective easy to follow protocol for those infected with Lyme disease and tick-borne illnesses.
